Not OP, but I like to use dashi packets (they are sort of like tea bags for the soup base) in boiling water, but you could also use homemade dashi, dashi powder, or chicken/vegetable broth. Bring to a boil, add any veggies/mushrooms you feel like. Lower heat to a low low simmer before adding your miso, so it doesn’t lose its nutrients / flavor. I place a couple tablespoons of miso in a metal mesh strainer and dip the whole thing in while mixing to help the miso dissolve. At this point you can add tofu or wakame seaweed and heat it back up to a bare simmer if they’re cold from the fridge. Garnish with green onions and enjoy!
I literally just buy the paste and add hot water to it. You can add tofu and seaweed and scallions but that just adds calories.
Bonus: miso paste makes a great salmon marinade with sesame oil, ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and maple syrup. I like to eat it with mashed yams that I make with ginger, garlic, and spinach. 👩🏼🍳
Protein is thought to be the most satiating nutrient, which is ideal. As such something that packs some protein will probably be effective in filling you up for that 30 minutes to an hour. My go-to is a boiled egg
My partner is on a special diet so we always have a few hard boiled eggs in the fridge, topped up daily.
It's pretty easy to just have them pre-prepared for snacks
But they didn’t say that they’re boiling an egg while they’re cooking. They just said their go to is a boiled egg. With the implication that it is already made. Like the other comments have pointed out. If they’re already boiled as part of your prep at the beginning of the week or whatever then you don’t have to boil a new one every time you’re cooking. It’s already done. There’s no point in making your argument.
No, OP said this happens when they are cooking
Not that they are currently cooking and need it right now
Not to mention, I doubt they live in a grocery store with everything we could possibly mention available to them to satiate themselves right this second
Yeah, which is why I'm confused at your comment. It's not hard to prepare several eggs so you're ready the next time. Yeah, maybe you should find a different snack if you're out of boiled eggs, but you can be ready for the next time.
We're not on a special diet or anything, nor do we eat that many boiled eggs, yet we still have some on hand. They are fine for a couple weeks, so there's really no excuse to not have any on hand if this happens regularly.
I’d actually be wary of nuts or any high fat food just because the fattiness makes them very satiating, aka they could easily spoil your appetite before dinner. I think protein (id go with eggs) are your best bet.
Drink water or a cup of tea
A small piece of fruit
A tomato, or a tiny salad (just a bit of lettuce and tomato with a pinch of salt and a drop of oil and vinegar). Carrots, celery, peppers... Anything you can just chop twice and bite right into
Just wait it out
Red seedless grapes are my go-to!! Eating about 20 of them is a slow process and equates to 40 calories. Low caloric, high density, long eating time— grapes satisfy me!
Where do you get grapes this small? The red grapes I buy are huge and 15 of them are near 100 calories...
I would love to eat more smaller grapes rather than large ones, as it takes longer, like you said
Oh wow … maybe I’m using the wrong calorie-tracking database, where it’s giving me misinformation? Thanks for questioning my perception here. I did lol though that I’m eating tiny grapes 🤣.
This is a good one. People feel like they should never be hungry but it's good to have a decent fast between meals. Get use to the feeling of the hunger and your next meal will be awesome.
Wait until lunchtime. 30 minutes to 1 hour of hunger is normal before a meal. Or eat some raw vegetables I guess. Do you eat breakfast? Are you undereating generally? Your hunger should never feel urgent or need immediate satiation unless you either have blood sugar issues or are in a steep calorie deficit.
I have a carrot! Or cherry tomatoes. You don't need to chop anything and can just smash it while making your real lunch. The fibre fills you up and stops you from binging.
I have had the problem of nibbling to much whilst cooking prior to eating my own cooked meal, tried everything even raw carrots but eat to many, the only thing that worked is a cup of coffee as for me it suppresses my appetite as I find coffee doesn't pair well with food I have it on its own, I have found decaf with low fat or plant based milk without sugar just as effective
Try a dark, leafy green salad (like kale and spinach) with some Apple Cider Vinegar & Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It will help prep your digestive system. Maybe add some colorful bell peppers and red onion too. Any colorful veggies and homemade salad dressing for dipping are good too!
Drink a glass of water, if your still hungry after : hard boiled egg, nuts like almonds, carrots, banana, any fruit really. Those will fill you up but so much that you can’t finish your dinner. Just be careful with nuts because they can be high in calories.
Yes to the other comments- drinking hot tea, especially black tea with come caffeine, really helped me. If I needed to eat something, carrots and celery were my go to
I always snack on veggies or fruit. Or eat my vegetable early that I would have with my meal coming up. It slows me down eating too fast cause it’s plain broccoli or peas.
OKAY so there are these delicious protein packs called “good catch” (aka vegan tuna fish) that make me feel hella full and I eat them before a meal to curb my hunger. I commented celery, but I forgot about these guys they are so legit.
Handful of blueberries, or a few spoonfuls of Greek yogurt get me through a pinch. Or just make yourself not eat if 30 mins away. Depends what you had for breakfast, and how severe your hunger pains are.
Munch on a few pieces of carrot or green apple (even better sprinkled with salt and a bit of chilli powder)… keeps you full just enough to finish your cooking, and increases your appetite for the super delish meal that follows.
Scrambled eggs. I'm also lazy and like to get out as fast as possible, so instead of making it over the oven I will put it in a mug and microwave it for 30 seconds, cut it in half and then microwave it for anther 10-20 seconds. It's fast and filling

A cup of miso soup. It’s warm, salty, filling, and only 50 calories. It’s my best diet trick.
i used to have that as a snack but forgot about it, thanks for the reminder!! i love miso soup and just had it for breakfast today :)
How do you make your miso soup? I’m thinking of adding that to my meal rotation.
Not OP, but I like to use dashi packets (they are sort of like tea bags for the soup base) in boiling water, but you could also use homemade dashi, dashi powder, or chicken/vegetable broth. Awesome!
Hunger is the best condiment but my suggestion would be a some yogurt or kefir if you really needed something.
Carrots, cucumbers and hummus!
Just the carrots
Yes, would leave out the hummus if it's only 30 mins before dinner
Protein is thought to be the most satiating nutrient, which is ideal. As such something that packs some protein will probably be effective in filling you up for that 30 minutes to an hour. My go-to is a boiled egg
Or nuts
Walnuts work great for this. The fat may also discourage overeating when you finally start your meal.
that’s a good idea! i’ll try it out, thank you :)
Nuts would also be a good idea
yeah eat a handful of pistachios. "i'm too hungry to wait for my food to finish cooking so i'll BOIL AN EGG" what is this
My partner is on a special diet so we always have a few hard boiled eggs in the fridge, topped up daily. It's pretty easy to just have them pre-prepared for snacks
ok, but "eat an egg" is very different than "boil an egg" while you're already impatiently waiting for something else to finish cooking.
Dude how long are you boiling eggs for? It's pretty fast
But they didn’t say that they’re boiling an egg while they’re cooking. They just said their go to is a boiled egg. With the implication that it is already made. wtf is going on. OP said they're cooking!
No, OP said this happens when they are cooking Not that they are currently cooking and need it right now Not to mention, I doubt they live in a grocery store with everything we could possibly mention available to them to satiate themselves right this second
I got it. Why cook a meal while waiting for your meal to cook? However, you're not going to win this one. Welcome to Reddit.
We keep boiled eggs on hand. They last quite a while in the refrigerator, so "eat an egg" just requires peeling it.
...did you read the comment i responded to, or?
Yeah, which is why I'm confused at your comment. It's not hard to prepare several eggs so you're ready the next time. Cup of tea, yes! Herbal, green, black, fruit, flower, tiscane, whatever is your jam.
Definitely tea!!
A cup of low sugar juice might not be a bad idea either.
Pickles are low calorie
Banana
Banana + celery. Came here to comment celery but I can’t argue banana so here I am.
:)
(:
Personally I would eat an apple or some kind of citrus fruit.
Drink a glass of water
This, it will improve your digestion, also, being thirsty can be confused with being hungry.
hard boiled egg
Red seedless grapes are my go-to!! Eating about 20 of them is a slow process and equates to 40 calories. Low caloric, high density, long eating time— grapes satisfy me!

The grapes I always see are like thumb tip size, but I feel like those are really big. You probably aren't too far off if you get small grapes
Satiate that hunger with carrot and celery sticks.
A handful of nuts is a great snack to hold you over until lunch
Dont tell the boss that
Just drink water.
This is a good one. People feel like they should never be hungry but it's good to have a decent fast between meals. Get use to the feeling of the hunger and your next meal will be awesome.
Grapes, satsumas, olives, almonds or other nuts, a glass of fruit or vegetable juice, dried apricots or other fruits,.. hope this helps.
Edamame or wasabi peas
I just found a great deal of snack size for 5 bucks at Walmart!! Maybe mini baggies trail mix or Greek yogurt.
how about some fruit? Perhaps an apple or an orange to hold you over? Maybe some sliced cucumber/peppers and hummus?
Wait until lunchtime. 30 minutes to 1 hour of hunger is normal before a meal. Or eat some raw vegetables I guess. Do you eat breakfast? Are you undereating generally? Your hunger should never feel urgent or need immediate satiation unless you either have blood sugar issues or are in a steep calorie deficit.
good point, i’ll pay more attention to what i eat for breakfast. thanks!
I slice a tomato and add lemon juice and salt
Cut veg. Eat some carrots.
I usually go for a handful of nuts, usually cashews or almonds
Popcorn. Crepini egg wrap. Berries. Carrots. Square of dark chocolate. Zero cal beverage
My go to light snacks: Rice cake, babybel cheese, roasted seaweed, a handful of prebagged skinny popcorn
baby carrots
I always have pickles on hand. Fruits work sometimes.
I have a carrot! Or cherry tomatoes. You don't need to chop anything and can just smash it while making your real lunch. The fibre fills you up and stops you from binging.
Small handful of almonds or other nuts is perfect.
I usually eat fruit or crunchy veggies in such situations.
Almonds, Greek yogurt, small piece fruit (apple) depending on what your looking for that covers fats, carbs and protein!
A piece of fruit. Apples are a fantastic snack
Start cooking your meal 30 minutes earlier
hunger comes and goes in waves, once you get used to not having anything it will become easier over time
Tbh I’d just have my meal early
If you’re hungry then maybe eat your lunch earlier?
String cheese or a pickle is my go to!
GG fiber cracker. European.
Not sure if this qualifies, but... GUM is really helpful to get you chewing something or postpone your meal.
A (small) handful of nuts.
Raw veggies with hummus!
I have a glass of water. Celery and some zero sugar peanut butter Green tea. Just simple
Don’t eat.
Unless your hunger symptoms is being light-headed or a bad headache, just accept the feeling of hunger. You’ll be fine.
Peanut butter filled pretzels. The Trader Joes' brand has only 150 calories for 10 nuggets. Very satisfying.
that does sound really good but im not from the US unfortunately 😔
Get ya a bag of pretzels and just dip em in PB, has about the same effect.
Avocado with a little salt on it
30 min? Just wait. Drink some water. I believe in you.
Drink a glass of water, if your still hungry after : hard boiled egg, nuts like almonds, carrots, banana, any fruit really. Those will fill you up but so much that you can’t finish your dinner. Just be careful with nuts because they can be high in calories.
Sometimes not eating can be more healthy than eating
cup of tea or water- cold or hot. Slices of cucumber or fruit just to fill the gap
Sip some bone broth. Then ease into eggs.
try drinking 16 Oz of water instead of snacking, you'll get fuller faster when you sit down to eat
Tall glass of water.
Why can't you just...eat lunch?
Because they are still cooking lunch. Did you read the post?
Yikes, touche!
A piece of good chocolate and some nuts.
Deez nuts
Big spoonful of peanut butter
Instead of eating, try an activity that you find stimulating— a quick walk if you’re able to, cleaning, a game, read an article…
Nuts I agree. Low calorie high protein protein bar.
Water, or if you're genuinely so hungry you can't wait until lunch, you're breakfast isn't fulfilling enough.
I know it’s salty but a little jerky? I’m no healthy food expert. I also noticed no one wrote this yet so maybe I’m wrong too lol
Just have a drink and put up with it. If you ain't able to wait 30 min for lunch your main problem is not what to eat 39 min before your meal..
My tip is to drink any freshly squeezed juice. My fav is celery+apple juice, but it's up to your taste :)
Light and fit yogurt 80 calories and 12 G protein plus yummy
I share a piece of fruit with my dog :)
Proteins, like nuts or peanut/nut butters.
Beef jerky
I love a nice salad before dinner while I’m cooking 🥗
A cup of broth. Salty and delicious.
Protein shake?
Hard boiled egg
Willpower since it’s only 30 minutes.
I usually do some pistachios, or cut vegetables like celery/carrots, but sometimes I will do a small piece of dark chocolate (usually around 70 cal).
Handful of plain raw almonds. Worked like a charm for me. It's not the tastiest but it's healthy and quick.
Yes to the other comments- drinking hot tea, especially black tea with come caffeine, really helped me. If I needed to eat something, carrots and celery were my go to
Nuts
Try coffee or Metamucil. Both healthy and work as a hunger suppressant.
Jerky
Egg
I always snack on veggies or fruit. Or eat my vegetable early that I would have with my meal coming up. It slows me down eating too fast cause it’s plain broccoli or peas.
I eat sea weed snacks
OKAY so there are these delicious protein packs called “good catch” (aka vegan tuna fish) that make me feel hella full and I eat them before a meal to curb my hunger. I commented celery, but I forgot about these guys they are so legit.
Some kinda Salad, mixed veggies or some mixed dry fruits etc
Almond, walnuts, carrots and grapes
Hard boiled egg
Can you just eat lunch 30 minutes earlier?
Handful of blueberries, or a few spoonfuls of Greek yogurt get me through a pinch. Or just make yourself not eat if 30 mins away. Depends what you had for breakfast, and how severe your hunger pains are.
Handful of mixed nuts.

String cheese sometimes but I usually grab a few almonds or trail mix.
