It's just a visual thing. I'm not a creator myself but there's a bunch of different worlds that do stuff like that. There's some anime worlds that have cell shaded styles that get applied to your model, etc.

There's definitely some shaders out there that I've seen do this but I've no clue where to find them publicly available.
