Koppen Climate Types of California

The San Francisco Bay Area is well-known for its many microclimates due to the Golden Gate being the only place on the coast of California where cold ocean waters infiltrate inland.

AttitudeAdjuster_

Yep! California has a lot of interesting microclimates generally due to a combination of a lot of different factors like topology and ocean currents, and the Bay Area as you say has a lot especially. The LA area is quite heavily variable in a relatively small area, too. The west coast of North America generally is a really interesting place to look at when it comes to climatology imo!

YoIronFistBro

Shame the state has so many earthquakes, the climate of the coast is heaven.

Captain_Fordo

99% of earthquakes in California are undetectable by a person and those that are, usually are a mild tremor for a few seconds. Hardly ever do we get quakes that’ll actually knock anything big over or off shelves.

Details on the definitions of each types can be found [here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification)

visicircle

you forgot the "perpetual firestorm" climate. Such an oversight!

Jannes_Bag

"subject to change"

AttitudeAdjuster_

Yeah absolutely, we've seen some shifts in zones over the last couple decades and there's definitely more to come, unfortunately.

xripkan

California and Perth in Autralia are the only regions outside Mediterranean Sea with a Med climate. I am from southern Greece and the climate is Csa the same with the greatest part of California!

AttitudeAdjuster_

Those are the largest areas for sure, but the Mediterranean climate in Csa or Csb forms reaches all the way up to the Canadian border on the west coast of North America, and there's small bits of it Arizona, New Mexico, the central valley in Chile, South Africa and small bits in other parts of Australia too. It's a great climate though, definitely!

xripkan

Csa is good but I would prefer just a bit cooler summers. If I had to choose that would be Csb, the southern French climate.

YoIronFistBro

Csb is more like northern Portugal. The French riviera is just on the cool end of Csa.

xripkan

France has both Csa and Csb. https://en.climate-data.org/europe/france-216/

YoIronFistBro

The Csb is found in the elevations, not at sea level

YoIronFistBro

Central Chile and the Western Cape of South Africa also have Mediterranean climates.

Glarder

They also go all the way up the west coast, even some parts of Alaska technically have a mediterranean climate.
