At what point does someone have a cough? If you cough once in a day because you haven't had a drink near you in a while and have dry mouth from meds, do you now "have a cough"? What about twice in a day? Where does that line get crossed to where you officially are "sick"?

I'd say you have a cough if it can't be fixed by drinking something

Fair enough 🤣 seems like an obvious enough solution

The answer is when you know you know. It’s like how do you measure a heap of sand? If I grab a heap of sand, and I take one grain of sand and put it away is the heap still a heap? If so I can repeat this process and when I go to one grain it’s still a heap. So regarding to the cough. If you’re coughing from your chest and it hurts or sore throat that’s bad or blood comes out. If you’ve been coughing wet with mucus, you have a cough. If it’s a dry cough and it is there for about a week then you might have tuberculosis. So if you think you have a cough, stock up on vitamin C and Zinc

Like I said, I'm not actually coughing, I swear I'm not asking this to get out of Covid restrictions or anything, I was just curious. It popped in my head and I figured this was the best place to ask 🤷‍♀️

Coughs that have a clear reason are just coughs. Dust, pollen, etc. When a cough has no discernable reason, almost certainly coupled with other symptoms like stuffy nose, aches, phlegmy cough, sore throat, malaise, and which get worse for awhile, it becomes obvious you've caught a virus. Like someone else said, you'll know. Not from the first or second cough, but soon. Often, my first symptom is a raw-feeling "nose-throat," which is what I call the back of my throat up towards my sinuses, which hurts and makes me feel the need to swallow constantly. When that happens, the rest of the cold symptoms will follow within maybe 6-24 hours.

Just having a cough on its own doesn't mean your sick. Generally when your sick your cough will be accompanied by a headache or chest congestion or a fever or vomiting etc. A lone cough is usually(not always) allergies or dry throat or something along those lines.
