Orca whale captured at the perfect moment
By - d3333p7
Water at the front seems a little too different from the water in the back. Seems shopped.
Is seems this picture has been ORCAstrated
It's quite whale done.
Yeah, looks like it was done on porpoise!
I don’t sea it
It doesn’t get my seal of approval.
This thread deserves a slow clap.
I was really racking my brain trying to find the pun here
I was just trying to figure out how much you had to pay the orca and the sun to pose like that?! 😉
Straight up killer, whale done
DYK Orcas are in the [dolphin](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oceanic_dolphin) family.
If you did, sorry for wasting your time…
I was watching How It’s Made and they were doing a thing on wallpaper, towards the end they were printing Orcas on the paper, and the narrator said “dolphins”—I thought “you idiot, that’s a whale!”. Wife and I looked it up and learned that all dolphins are whales but not all whales are dolphins…we are both 35 years old.
I gave you the seal award because that’s orca food right there.
Your seal of approval is very much appreciated.
Wish I had an award for you.
Well sure. The photographer has great killer instincts. I wonder if there was an orca-stra there too. Or not. maybe it'd be too over-whale-ming. Ok. That's enough. This has gotten orcaward. No more whale puns. They're krilling me.
It does look a bit too perfect, and probably altered, but I live next to the water and take lots of pics, sometimes the water does look a very different color and texture over a distance, so it can't be judged just on that.
Definitely shopped. You think someone was just waiting to take a random photo of a sunset and an orca just randomly appeared on the surface and stood there for him to take the shot?
Plus the light reflection near the orca's blow hole doesn't make sense with a backlight like the sun.
Plus orcas typically don't randomly appear at sunset perfectly framed for a photo.
Plus water is an illusion.
/r/hydrohomies is in shambles
Seems it’s from a photographer who takes pictures of cetaceans from boats as routine, and takes many of them.
If the orca spends even a few seconds in this position, and the photographer was within even 10 degrees of the right angle, he could easily adjust his *own* position to get this to line up.
Maybe it’s Photoshopped for other reasons I can’t tell, but not sure this is a good line of reasoning. There’s much crazier nature photography out there.
>If you look at the photographers Facebook page she said she took the picture of the sunset and the orca separately and then overlaid them in photoshop. She never claimed this was an actual pic she took. See Mary's Mark Photography
I thought that was highly unlikely. Thus my looking further into it. I'm like the fucking Picasso of finding bullshit.
I haven’t seen a truly convincing argument that it’s shopped yet, though I’m open to it. But I suspect people are having their suspicions over-validated by other commenters and it’s becoming a bandwagon.
From this thread:
1. Claims the photo is just too unlikely. Sometimes fate aligns indeed. They may take many pictures of cetaceans breaching and bobbing and whatnot, which can last a little while, and if they were even close to the same direction as the sun in one shot the photographer can move a couple of metres to align the angle. I’ve done that with other things (not orcas!). It’s not a sheer coincidence - hell I’ve seen far more ‘lucky’ pics than this, which couldn’t be adjusted by the photographer’s position. (r/confusing perspective is full of these, and I’ve taken a couple in my time)
2. What is this about the back water and the front water? It looks continuous to me, and the water further back will be a different hue (during a sunset) and focus from that in the front.
3. The lighting on the blowhole... I’m not sure what the exact intrinsic colour gradient is there anyway, but it’s naive to expect a very simple reflection at a perfect angle. Light scatters around edges - see any photo with a back to the sun - and with a complicated feature like the blowhole lip right near the edge I’m not sure I can say it wouldn’t be highlighted in this way.
4. ‘Definitely some artifacts from the shitty photoshop job’. Which? And really, if someone decides it must be photoshop would this really be *shitty*? Seems a bit much.
If they have other work that isn’t quite like this, and given how very good a photoshop this would be, I don’t see a reason to think it is one.
I’m not an expert and maybe I’m a sucker. But sometimes non-experts think optics is simpler than it is and are keen to play all-knowing detective (especially those modestly declaring themselves the ‘Picasso of bullshit’)... and can be as easily fooled into thinking something real is fake as vice versa.
At the risk of seeming stupider, I lean towards this being real.
The photographer herself acknowledged that it's a composite on [her facebook page](https://www.facebook.com/marysmarkphotography/posts/1961176874036215?comment_id=1961212607365975&reply_comment_id=1961258370694732).
> I lean towards this being real.
I think it's real and possibly not even altered besides color correction and other typical minor photoshop stuff. But I also know if i took a pic that was "almost perfect" that I'd be tempted to nudge it over a few pixels. But the photographer probably takes enough photos of this kind of subject that it's very possible they just got lucky
Yeah could easily be enhanced or touched up somehow, but I lean towards it being *substantially* real.
The skin looks dry. Where the shiny watery covering?
Where's the water-disturbance from when the whale came out of the water?
People on Reddit have a habit of projecting their own life experience onto others. If they wouldn't have done it, it's unlikely that *anyone* would have done it. If they haven't seen or done anything like it, it's impossible for anyone to have experienced it. I wouldn't put too much credence in the commenters saying it's shopped.
There are also a lot of people who fancy themselves experts, that XYZ is ‘obviously’ fake, and don’t realise how unintuitive photos can indeed be real. Just need one such comment and that will tip others to believe it because ‘someone speaking with such confidence must be an expert’. Even if they have no thorough argument accounting for the complexities out there.
A few months ago there was [this](https://www.ladbible.com/news/weird-social-media-users-confused-by-boris-johnsons-reflection-20210124.amp.html) stupid issue where a photo of Boris Johnson on the phone with Biden after his election was claimed to be fake - for no discernable reason - because people couldn’t grasp how perspective works. And that’s just confusion based on the geometry of a line, let alone much more complex effects.
People just want to be right. There is quite literally no evidence that this picture is photoshopped, for example, but some people have already clung to that because it's contrarian. They don't want to *prove* you're wrong, they just want to tell you you are.
Dude it’s not like the orca just pauses mid-breach with enough time to “move a few metres” to snap a picture. It would literally have to be the exact perfect angle and perfect timing, damn near impossible. As for the lighting, the light by his blowhole should be a straight shadow with the sun as low as it is, there shouldn’t be light reflecting off it like that. I’ve been a huge hobby photographer for years and the lighting alone immediately made me dismiss this as being real.
From all cases I’ve seen for other/‘actual’ whales, there’s a few second window. And it’s not a pause so much as a few seconds’ sweeping movement. But enough time for a skilled and quick-thinking photographer.
I’ve done a lot of photoshopping (though I’m not a professional, take this with some salt) and I think that if it’s photoshopped, then it’s more likely the sun was moved than the whale. There are a lot of signs that I normally look for and I don’t see any in the water (though the sun reflection and colours could have been added theoretically). The sun could have been moved but if it was then that’s an amazing job.
All of the artifacts are exactly what you would expect from JPEG compression. Artifacts can conceal editing which is why I can’t be entirely sure, especially on the sun. I don’t see any of the kinds of artifacts that would indicate editing. I think a lot of people really don’t understand JPEG. It’s very weird but super smart how it works.
Overall, I think it’s either real or very well done. Based on other work from the artist, it’s probably on the real side. A lot of stuff that seems too good to be true is fake so many people automatically assume it all is and end up with some confirmation bias.
You crazy even if the water was perfect that level symmetry’s impossible to randomly capture
The killer of dreams right here.
At least blend it in for God sakes
Also, wouldn’t there be a shadow where that reflection is?
If this is somehow real I’m picturing the photographer running along the beach to keep the whale perfectly between him and the sun until he randomly comes up out of the water.
Definitely is theres really bad artifacts left from the shitty photoshop job
And here i was thinking.. Wow, even orcas like the sunset.
**AQUAMAN (BEHIND THE CAMERA)**: *”Perfect. Let’s get one where your mouth is open and you’re, like, eating the sun.”*
Aquaman setting up ocean shots all for that sweet sweet karma.
He’s gotta do *something* with the downtime he gets when the Justice League is fighting an enemy on land.
**Willy the Orca**: *You done yet, Arthur? I’m getting tired of this shit.*
Anyone else hear Michael Jackson?
Hold me, like the river Jordon...
And i will then say to thee
Me! That's great.
I’m assuming his other flipper is waving a towel.
So long, and thanks for all the fish?
So sad that it should come to this.
Orca Wan Kenobi, with Sun Saber
OH NO! THE FEARSOME VAMPIRE ORCA IS DRAINING THE SUN
Only animal the shark is scared of, dolphins will force boop sharks too if need be.
Orcas are dolphins
I would have accepted “orca.” I would have accepted the colloquial “killer whale.” But because you said “orca whale” I gotta be that nerd.
Orcas are dolphins. They’re likely called killer whales due to a mistranslation, and are more appropriately called whale killers. Because these guys hunt in packs and can take down an actual whale.
Super cool photo, BTW.
I’d heard that before...and “whale killer” sounds immensely more terrifying.
Here's the thing...
Orcas are dolphins, and dolphins are whales. Nothing wrong with the title.
TIL that dolphins are a subset of whales. Neat.
You should not be downvoted, you are correct. Orcas fall into the odontoceti group, which are "toothed whales". This group contains all cetaceans that do not have baleen.
Orcas are whales though. As are dolphins.
I mean, the literal scientific name is Orcanis orca so you can’t be too mad about it.
They're referring to the whale part, not the orca part
I’m aware. Just saying they are technically both right.
I wouldn't say 'orca whale' was right whatsoever tbh
You all understand this has been photoshopped don't you ?
Yes, all of the other comments have already told us, thank you for the information
I’m not really sure how others use reddit, but I for one don’t upvote when the title is a fucking lie.
Also, wtf mods...
> Also, wtf mods...
Pissing into the wind.
Yes, we do. You repeating the same thing as the top comments doesn't make your view unique or relevant.
Thank you for all the fish, even though it was dolphins.
Orcas are dolphins.
Scuze me while I...
Kiss this guy
Da da da, du du du, du du du!
It looks likes it's holding a candle to the sky.
I'll be your candle on the waaaaaater
That’s absolutely breathtaking
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
Orca calls upon the planet, the trees and the animals, lend me your energy!
"Aw, he got a booger"
look at the beady black eyes it knew
Aren’t they protected? You should probably release it.
If you look at the photographers Facebook page she said she took the picture of the sunset and the orca separately and then overlaid them in photoshop. She never claimed this was an actual pic she took. See Mary's Mark Photography
Missed Photoshop-ortunity. Should have added a flying saucer that was pulling the orca up with his laser beam.
Orcas are dolphins, not whales. Just fyi
Dolphins are whales, too. They're in the odontoceti parvorder, which means "toothed whales".
Looks like Willy is doing good these days.
Orcas are actually dolphins
Dolphins are whales, too. Op isn't wrong.
Looks like a stellar weed ad.
I'd totally buy something called Blue Orca.
Dolphin, not whale
Dolphin and whale.
So pretty.. let’s capture it, put it in a tiny pool and force it to perform tricks for fucking mouth breathers
Looks like it's breathing its life force out like doctor who does when he's regenerating.
Sea World looks different
That's because there's only one correct way to "capture" an orca, and this is it - with a camera.
Kissing the sky
He’s consuming the sun
This orca appears to like the sun on its face.
I'll chop my left nut if this is real
Glitch in the matrix
Whales a paid actor.
Humming "Will you be there"
It is the opposite for me, the picture is beautiful enough, the coincidental is just distracting.
I’ve seen this on my sister’s elementary binder 15+ years ago
Free Willy 4: The Freeist of Willies
This seems photo shopped
“Justice is not a frivolous thing Simpson! It has little of anything to do with a disobedient whale now let’s vote!” - Principal Skinner
These pictures are almost always shopped.
Whole new meaning to sunkissed
It’s a perfect photo. It’s now my screensaver
It will never get the opportunity to appreciate this picture of it as we all do. Even if it could grasp photography, it was completely unaware it was ever framed in such a moment like this. There's an infinite number of ways that you and the world around you could be framed so beautifully at any given moment that we'll never see. A photograph taken from the same frame at the same time could still be shot and processed in a myriad of ways. And this is not just in photographs but even in simple patterns or mathematical equations, strings of coincidences, ironies and perfect contrasts, many in spectrums we can't even conceive of. It's almost tragic to think of all the magnificent, mind-blowing ways to frame our universe that have been lost and will continue to be lost. It gives all the more reason to appreciating all we can in front of us while we can. You might even find yourself in the perfect time and place without ever knowing it.
Get ready for animals and insects in front of the sun Perfect moments photo onslaught.
Question! Sunrise or Sunset?
Amazing looking even if fake
i thought it was a picture of a rock in the water for a good 5 minutes
"It's true to me goddammit"
Perfect moment for what?
gods nature is beautiful
I usually don’t give many upvotes or awards (albeit they are the free ones from Reddit), but you just got one of each from me. This is a cool shot
Fuckin' Diva. Seriously, think that thing didn't see the camera? :)
Pardon me while I kiss the sky
It's like the beam of sun is pulling it out of the water
She’s smokin tha sun.
That is a very serene boop
Why does this remind me of “They call me Terry Treehead”?
Idk why but the first thing that popped into my ahead was the very beginning of “hello” by Adele lmao I just picture it calmly popping up and saying “hello, it’s me”. And slowly sliding back down
Sometimes, life accidentally results in perfection.
She wants an i-device.
Looks like mermaid to me
The water wouldn’t look the way it does if the sun were in that position. It’s nice artwork but a misleading title.
So long, and thanks for all the fish!
I wish the photographer was credited here.
I came here for a captured orca. He looks very free.
I’d be shocked if this was real
Imagine, for a moment, being good at something
free willy yay
That is an awesome picture!
FREE THAT ORCA!!!
Lisa Frank just had a moment
I've always suspected that a killer whale sucks the sun out of the sky each night.
Ok...this is fucking nice.!!!
Stunning photo! 👍👏😃💜
Looks like it's balancing a candle on the tip of its nose.
Where are they taking him?
The market for shooting uninvited pregnant women just became real.
Sure me while I kiss the sky! Guitar solo
I knew it. The sun does not rise or set Its spit up every morning and swallowed every evening by Orcas.
